No. 10. In this issue: KFC Just Bought Its Way Into ChatGPT Answers

Five developments in AI and advertising from the past week, and what each one means for brands.

This Week in AI + Advertising

  1. Ask ChatGPT What to Eat for Under ₹100. KFC Just Bought Its Way Into the Answer.

KFC India, working with WPP Media, has become the first QSR brand in the country to advertise inside ChatGPT, placing its ₹99 Chicken Krisper Meal in front of anyone asking the assistant for cheap eats. Mamaearth and Sebamed are running their own separate ChatGPT campaigns the same week. An EssenceMediacom exec called it “the first ads of the post-search era,” and for once that isn’t just agency spin, this is the exact rollout we’ve been tracking since it landed in India last month, now with real brands and real budgets behind it.

  2. A Location Data Company Just Bought Foursquare. That Sentence Would Have Sounded Insane in 2018.

Infillion is acquiring Foursquare, folding in over 100 million points of interest across 200 countries, 16 billion human-verified check-ins, and location data on 250 million US devices, stacked alongside its existing Catalina purchase data. Foursquare quietly became infrastructure years after everyone stopped checking in on it publicly. The acquisition is a reminder that a lot of the most valuable ad-tech assets right now aren’t the flashy AI models, they’re the unglamorous datasets those models actually need to be useful.

  3. There Is Now a Public Directory of Every AI Bot Crawling Your Website

Fingerprint launched a free public Bot Directory listing AI crawlers and agents by provider and purpose, the first real attempt at a reference list for a problem most marketing teams haven’t assigned an owner to yet. If you don’t know how much of your reported traffic and conversions are AI agents rather than people, your funnel numbers have been quietly wrong for a while. Worth ten minutes this week: pull the share of sessions your analytics already tags as automated, then look at what that does to the conversion rate in your last board deck.

  4. Meta AI Can Now Optimise Your Ad Campaigns on Its Own. Nobody Asked It To Stop There.

Meta AI has moved from analysing ad performance to actively optimising live campaigns, identifying creative opportunities and budget shifts and acting on them with less human sign-off at every step. It is one more piece of Zuckerberg’s stated goal of fully automated ad creation by the end of this year. Each individual update reads as a convenience. Stacked together, they describe an ad account that increasingly runs itself, whether or not that was the brief.

  5. California Wants Every AI-Generated Actor to Wear a Label

A new California bill would require ads and content using fully AI-generated performers to carry a clear on-screen disclosure, closing a gap that current deepfake and likeness laws don’t fully cover: a synthetic performer who was never a real person to begin with. It is one state, one bill, not yet law. But it is the clearest sign yet that regulators are starting to draw a line between an AI tool helping a human performer and an AI system replacing one outright.
